The night is his friend. Whether he is in Madrid or in Paris, the 36 year old countertenor enjoys those hypnotic moments of the small hours. We will see him on the 22nd at the Opéra Royal de Versailles and on the 24th at TCE, at the resurection of the very baroque Steffani’s Niobe, recently released on cd by Warner.

What should I order for you?
A Hendrick’s Tonic. Gin with a cucumber slice. If there’s a lemon slice, it is not a real one. This is what I like to have after a concert, not before!

Which song to go along with it?
“April in Paris” by Ella Fitzgerald.

What makes you linger in the night?
When I am on tour, I like to go out in a bar or a nightclub to release all the adrenaline from the concert. So I go to bed late, around 4 or 5 in the morning and I wake up late. I sleep ten to twelve hours. Sleep is an insurance for the voice.

Are you more “indoors, at night” or “outdoors, daytime”?
I am more “indoors, at night”. I love nightime a lot, it’s a hypnotic world where everytone is alert and all are equal, even if it seems superficial. I love to go dancing, to blend in in the anonymity of a 2000 people nightclub right after being under the limelights.

A trip to the end of the world or to the end of the night?
To the end of the word. I was 21 the first time I travelled by plane. But my way of life has taught me to love travelling. Id I can, I try to prolong my stay so that I can visit the towns I still don’t know. Specially in South America. I definitely caught the travel bug!

Your ideal after hours?
At home, with friends. Nights are too short. After going to a restaurant and a bar, I really like to end the night in peace with a last Hendrick’s gin or a Cosmopolitan, of which I am a specialist.

In the case of a late night craving, you go…
In Paris, I don´t know. I’ve been disappointed by the Pied de Cochon. But in Barcelone or Madrid, where I go often for concerts, I go to tapa bars. If not, I always have cheese and sausissons* at home. I’ve more of a salty than a sweet tooth…

Your favorite bedside table book?
“The Unbearable Lightness” of Being by Kundera.

The phrase you like the most to say when the lights are off?
“Today was an intense day, wasn’t it?”
